The Abaraka – Responsible Travel project was born from many years of wanting to change things and being able to leave an important and positive mark somewhere or for someone.
After various personal and professional experiences in life, as anyone else might experience, I decided to take an 11-day trip across the entire territory of Gambia along its river, going from one end of the country to the other, discovering places with enormous significance for the population. When passing through areas and villages where collaboration was essential, my mind underwent such a change that I spent half the trip thinking about what to do when I returned to continue contributing to one of the 10 poorest countries in the world, but where people would give you everything to welcome you and make your stay pleasant. With the passing of months and faced with the need to bring aid there, eliminating intermediaries and providing real local support, the idea for this project materialized.
Abaraka is not just me. I am merely the one who will answer calls or emails to provide information on how to discover all this on one of the ethical and conscious trips we have scheduled. Abaraka – Gambia is you, with your help and responsibility during the trip and also every person in Gambia to whom all the effort intended to be contributed from here is directed, and with whom we actively collaborate so that this idea, which has become a reality, can continue for a long time.

The services at the destination that constitute the trip itself are contracted directly with local operators in Gambia so that the investment you contribute with the cost of the trip is largely reinvested in the businesses, restaurants, and entities there that need it and that help them improve their internal development and support families and communities.
The social aim of this project is to partially compensate for the lack of infrastructure in the country and the limited resources they have to subsist and develop further as a society and as a collective. With the expenditure that we, as responsible and ethical tourists, can provide during the trip, by having meals and staying in different businesses in each area to diversify the benefits for the local owners who, with great effort, push their projects forward and work to create more opportunities by hiring more staff and offering a fixed salary to support their families.
Furthermore, during our stay, we will be in contact with solidarity projects promoted by local youth who are trying to shift deeply rooted traditions towards a more open and protective vision for their families. They fight every day to abolish female genital mutilation (despite being prohibited by law there since 2015, cases still occur). They also support early cancer detection, especially in the case of breast cancer, where self-examination is key.
